Shoplifting Charge
Okay here's the story...
I was with a friend in the mall. We shoplifted a few things and were obviously caught. The total amount was under 100 dollars. Luckily that only makes is a misdemeanor. The store called the cops and they questioned us but did not read us our miranda rights. they asked questions like "Is this everything you stole?" "Did you take this" "was this what was in your purse?" "Have you ever been arrested for a crime before" and so on. I think that might be helpful in my case. Anyway we have to appear for court in May. Im worried about the consequences (Will i have to serve jail time, probation, fines, have to stay in the state). It was a stupid decision to make and i know that. I was 18 and my friend is 17 but they consider both of us adults. This is the first and only thing i have ever been caught doing. Can anyone give me some information and advice on what to do? I would really appreciate it. thanks.

Re: Shoplifting Charge
Miranda rights do not always get read, unless you are under arrest and being interrogated by the police.
Whether or not you will get jail time will depend on your criminal background. If it is your first offense, probation, fines, comunity service, classes... would be more likely then actually getting a jail sentence.
