    Landlord Changing Rent Payment Method
I am living in California and rented an apartment. For the past 3 years we have always droped our rent check at manager's box. Recently the property management company sant us letters informing us we will mail our rent to their company starting from next month, and must be mailed by the 1st of month otherwise will be charge $50 late fee.

We tentants are not happy about this chage, is there anyway we could do to reject this change?

if we couldn't, is it legal for me to deduct postage and other cost from the rent?

It costs 41 cents to mail a letter and you can visit your local 99 cents store and buy a whole box of envelopes. Total cost - is about 42 cents per month. Are you seriously going to jeopardize the roof over your head in CA's tight housing market for 42 cents???

And yes, legally, he can change the payment location or method with notice.

The proper way to reject that notice would be to put in your 30 day notice (or whatever notice is in your rental agreement) and move.

Thank you for your reply, of couse I am not serious about the postage, deducting the mailing expense from the check is just a way we tentants express our feelings about this change. This is the second time they vary the payment method in six months.
And the risk of rent lost in mail is another problem that I am afraid of.

Send it Certified or Priority, so you can prove that it was mailed and received - you can track it online.

You can buy the postage for it online, too, for that matter.

I have sent my rent for years through mail to my Landlord. Not once in nearly ten years has my rent failed to reach my Landlord. If Landlord wants rent mailed ask them if they wish to furnish prepaid evenlopes mine does. I mail my rent on 28th or 29th of each month and rent arrives no later than 1st without fail. By the way I am also in CA
