What Are the Emancipation Laws In Ohio
I just wanted to make sure I understand laws in ohio. My son is going to be 17 next month. He wants to be emancipated from us because he doesn't like our rules. He becomes very difiant when he doesn't get his way. Also he doesn't want to attend school. I have done everything I can to try to get him straightened out. I am at wits end with him. I just want to let him become emancipated due to letting him learn the hard way, on his own. I live in Columbus, Ohio. Things I have read tell me that he cannot become emancipated in the state of ohio, does anyone know if that is true? Thank you

As it happens, I had reason to look this up for someone else, just recently, who was also in Columbus.

The state of Ohio will only recognize the emancipation of a teen under two circumstances; one, if the teen is legally married (in Columbus, a 17 year old who wants to be married must have not only parental permission but also the permission of the probate court) or if the teen has joined the active armed forces (which I believe also requires parental permission at his age, though not judicial permission). If the marriage (or the service in the armed forces) ends before the minor's 18th birthday, the emancipation is automatically rescinded and the minor reverts to the care and control of his parents.

Ohio will not consider emancipating a teen under the age of 18 under any other circumstances.
