Re: Got Caught Shoplifting
My advice is don't be stupid and go back into Macy's.
If you really want to learn about what stores are starting to do you can watch the TV specials on how casinos track cheats and track whales, or big spenders. They have camera systems that can determine with 90%+ accuracy if someone is in their casino just based upon a mugshot and a camera shot. The other 10% is up to the security officers and bosses that run the casino.
If you are a whale and walk in from another casino, and they have a picture of you, chances are they will greet you before you hit the floor. In many cases they have people who know who the whales are as soon as they are in the door. These handlers learn all the whales based upon meeting them, seeing pictures, reading their bios, etc. They are rare, as are the cheats. These handlers and the computer systems also know the cheats as well as the regular card counters and card sharks.
Guess what? Loss Prevention in a store has similar systems, similar databases, and people who are paid to know who the cheats are. In some department stores, such as Nordstrom, the salespeople learn who the regular customers are from time to time. They also can learn who the regular shoplifters are in their department. I think the database is ChoicePoint.
It's 30% of people LIKE YOU that drive up prices for US. It's 70% of people similar to you, but work for the store, that drive up prices for US.
Cheers,
UBF

More like 95-99% accuracy. Video analytics are improving daily. I wouldn't expect Macy's to have a system like that, but who knows, don't risk it and don't go back for a year or so.
Also, they CANNOT ban you from ALL Macy's stores. And for life? Come on....you will be fine if you go into a Macy's in a different city or even state, just don't plan on shoplifting again.
PS: I am happy to see that this board cleaned up in my absence and got rid of some of the trash floating around.

Bam! -
You would be surprised at what technology is out there. I read a recent article in Popular Science regarding hotels and grocery stores using cameras and databases. It also has technology to look for the attempted bottom of the cart thefts that cost our industry millions, if not billions.
A few months back I read an article on a company called Intellivid. They can actually use a database track suspected "consumers" from the time they come in, through the departments, and to the register. It still takes a trained set of eyes to see what the person is actually doing.
A lot of what is in the casinos is being made less expensive and sold to the consumer market. If it can catch a casino cheat it can catch a shoplifter. Granted, Casino margins are much slimmer than retail margins. ...but the margins are just as important.
Some of the stuff that LP is using allows them to take that photograph, load it into their CCTV system, and search the hard drives for similar looking people and video.
IBM has a slick little system coming out (probably because they also sell the SANs that house the digital recordings and the high-end servers that can perform the search) that will allow someone's data (a thief) to be archived in a DB2 database and when that person walks in the store LP will be alerted.
Securitas or Securicorp has a nifty little system as well. It can scan past video for a facial recognition and they can monitor past events to see what was lifted. They can also alert when a certain thief is in a building.
With everything being put into a database it might even give LP and department managers an edge to know that when the lady buying the $4000 fur coat every year comes in she also lifts some cheap perfume or a tester and that should be overlooked or a manager should present her with a new bottle of whatever she lifted or usually lifts.
That having been said I reiterate what I said in the first place:
Stay out of the Macy's. Or, you can risk going back in there and getting smacked with a trespassing citation.
