Police Officer Asked Me About My Immigration Status
i was recently arrested for shoplifting charges and i dont know why the police officer asked me for my immigration status, i did not know that me answering that question would put me at risk
do you think the police officers usually do this to deport people? or is it kind of normal for them to ask someone arrested about their citizenship status? should i be very worried about this?how do i know if they already filed for my deportation? or can they file even before my court date?
i'm so worried my court date is not until 2 weeks and i've talked to a criminal defense attorney already who is planning on getting me an ACD, as I've read an ACD in NY does not constitute a conviction unless I plea guilty or admit the charges/facts, so I'll be very careful on that but it also says if the judge still has reasons to believe I'm guilty they could write that down on the records which may make my ACD turn into a conviction no matter what
Re: Police Officer Asked Me About My Immigration Status
Whether or not the officers inquire about your status, you can count on the USCIS finding out about what happened; it probably won't significantly affect you if you get an ACD (and stop stealing). I don't add that last bit to be mean, but some people really don't get it.
Re: Police Officer Asked Me About My Immigration Status
yes i will stop
I DEFINITELY learned my lesson
it's centainly not worth it
and i don't want to risk anything that will separate me from my family specially my mom as i love her alot and she's a permanent resident also planning to apply for citizenship soon, i don't want to do anything that will disappoint her again and lose her trust/love, and i certainly dont want to throw away my future just like this as i am a college student and graduating soon
thx for your reply
