Shoplifting in Mission, TX - Consequences for a traveler
I am not a US citizen, but live in a border city in Mexico. I made a huge mistake at a Walmart store and was caught shoplifting 2 items of $9 USD each. I was taken to the city jail, spent 24 hrs there, saw a judge, and then I was sent to the County Prison for processing. A few hrs later, I was released with only my signature. I am 30. I was told that I would receive in the mail a citation to be on court in the next weeks, which of couse, I will follow.
What are the consequences of this mistake? Should I be afraid of loosing my visitor visa? Given the circumstances, could I seal off this criminal record in the US with the help of an attorney? Am I considered as a "convict"?
Thanks for the info you can provide me.

It would be wise under the circumstances to consult a criminal defense lawyer, to see if you can avoid getting a criminal conviction.
