Violation 155.25 For Stealing Mail
hey, on monday i was visiting a friend at a hospital in new york, and one of my other friends stopped by and didnt want to pay to park in the parking lot so asked if he can park outside the hospital on a local street and we pick him up, so me and a few other friends (2 others) decided to get him and after we found parking for him he got in our car, and we were driving back to the hosptal, a block away, we got pulled over by the cops, and they searched our car repeatedly saying it smelled like weed but didnt find any (wasnt my car, i was in the passanger seat) they told us that they pulled us over because they got a complaint that someone in a similar car was going around and stealing someones mail. we kept tell police officers that we didnt do it, so they said they were gonna have the lady come over and id us to see if it was one of us. so one by one they pulled us aside and asked us to look at one of the police car (im assuming she was sitting in there), she told the cops that i was the one infront of her house and i stole her letters from her mailbox i guess. i got arrested and charged petite larceny 155.25.
im 20 years old, go to school full time and work part time, ive never been arrested before but did get a summons last year for disorderly conduct(fighting infront of a club)
i dont know what i should do, i dont know if ill be able to afford a lawyer, since my job mainly just pays for school and stuff. any suggestions?
any idea what i can be sentenced too? i really dont want to pay too many fines, and CAN NOT GO TO JAIL

The evidence against you being what? Just this lady's word, or did they actually find stolen mail in the car or in your possession?
If you cannot afford a lawyer, petition the court for a court-appointed lawyer.

they didnt find any mail, just the fact that she said it was me

Ask the court for a public defender if you can't afford an attorney. Ensure that he puts your friends that were with you on the witness list. It might be too late to get video from where you were with them, but it might not hurt to try. IF you can prove that the little old lady
While you don't want the post office involved, your attorney (if they have the time) can see if she had ever reported similar crimes to the post office. If so, and if you can prove you were not in the area during the times of those crimes, you might be able to beat this one.
...nothing against PDs, but you might be able to spend some money and get an attorney with less of a caseload. PDs are pretty busy and you might just be another statistic.
