First Offense Shoplifting By A Minor
Im almost 16 years old (my birthday is in another few months) and for my friends 16th birthday we went to new york city with her parents (we live in massachusetts). While we were there I was caught shoplifting from an urban outfitters store. I cooperated as best I could, i was polite and answered all their questions. THey didn't call my parents but they said that they would be sending me a fine. They gave me almost literally no information other than that i was banned from all Urban outfitters, free people, and anthropology stores, and that I would be recieving a fine.
I have no problem adhereing to these conditions, I know what i did was wrong and i will gladly pay the consequences. But i am applying again for a summer job at a camp for kids grades 1-9 (to be a junior councellor) they trust me there and I have a very good record, I know they do a background check that requires my social security number, and im wondering if this will show up.
The only information that the store has is my name and address, they also took down some information about my height and weight. I'm really upset about the fact that they left me very uninformed although i tried to ask questions and was very civil. They said nothing about convictions and i was not arrested.
I am most worried about this showing up on my permanent record since it is immaculate, I'm an honors student in my school and participate in a lot of extracurricular activities.
What should I expect?
Will this show up on my permanent record?
If this does end up on my record is there any way to get rid of it?
How will the fact that i was in new york but i live in massachusets affect this?
Thank you, any and all answers will be much appreciated.
Re: Minor: First Offense Shoplifting
If you are convicted of theft it will show up on a background check. Talk to your Attorney about possible Diversion programs which could result in no conviction appearing on your record
Re: Minor: First Offense Shoplifting
If there was no involvement by the police or courts, and all they told you was that they would be sending you a fine (a/k/a a "civil demand"), it does not appear that they have sought prosecution. If there is no criminal charge or prosecution, there's no public record of the incident.

Thats what I get for skimming over the post. Of course if no Police involvment and no court ther eis no record outside of store or any retail database they "might" have placed your name in
Re: First Offense Shoplifting By A Minor
thank you so much.
They said that they were sending my profile to other stores but other than that its not going to be on any database other than being filed at the store. They told me i was not going to be convicted or charged of anything, so that means that it shouldn't show up on a backgroud check if i apply for a job?

That's right, police weren't called and you weren't charged criminally, so this is just a civil matter between you and the store.
Re: First Offense Shoplifting By A Minor
Chances are that they put you in a Choice Point or similar database. It's likely that if you try to apply for a job with the local camp they will only check the official criminal records. You were not arrested, so that question is an easy one to answer.
...but you really need to get your shit together if you are a leader of young children. These kids look up to you. ...and if the LP officers for that store have kids and happen to see you, you could be toast.

I was caught at UO too. How are you paying your civil demand? Do your parents know? This really sucks hahah
