Can A Permanent Resident Travel Abroad For Work
    FLORIDA
    Hello.
I am permanent resident since sept2006. I will be able to apply for naturalization in sept2009,but now I have to go to work abroad. I accumulated till now like 420 days out of 540 required to apply for naturalization. DO I have to apply for reentry permit or Do I just have to reach the 540 days before sept 2009,without being absent from the USA for more than 6 months consequently? Where can I check exactly how many days I have been physically present in the USA?
    thanks

You'll need to file for a re-entry permit and an "application for preservation of residence" with UCIS.

application for preservation of residence is called "Application to Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes" - USCIS form N-470, find out more at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/usc...0045f3d6a1RCRD

for travel document information and application look at http://en.wiredtape.com/wiki/USCIS_Form_I-131

mind you, that if you stay outside the us for 1.5 months to 6 months (if i remember correctly) this is considered as non-consecutive time in the us, and it will break your 540 day streak...

For a permanent resident alien who must leave the United States for certain employment purposes and wishes to preserve his or her status as an immigrant in order to pursue naturalization.

Do you know which kind of employment purposes are included?

No, it means that your "residency clock" for naturalization (assuming you wish to become a citizen) will re-set.

Speak to someone at your area UCIS office to ensure that your particular employment is covered.
