Shoplifting At Vons
*this story is ridiculous and you may laugh, but please do not leave any negative comments
I am 17 years old, a clean record, not a trouble maker and a good student. I just applied for college a couple of months ago and yesterday, I got caught shoplifting at a Vons in Torrance,California. :wallbang: As ridiculous as it sounds, I stole a bag of munchies and a box of lunchables. I was hungry and I didn't have any money so I put it in my purse. Why? I don't even know myself.
As I walked out, the loss prevention worker told me to tell him what I had taken. I immediately told him and followed him to the tables where people can drink the Starbucks they buy from the mini Starbucks inside the Vons store. They asked me why I did it and I told them the truth (I did not have money and I was hungry). They wrote down my social security, my drivers license information(weight, height, age, birthday, license number, etc.), where I worked (I work at the mall and I keep all my phone numbers in my cellphone, which I didn't have with me) but I told them I didn't know the address and phone number but I did tell them which mall. (If you are wondering why on Earth I would steal if I have a job, the clothing store I work at has not scheduled me in 3 weeks because business has been slow and they can not afford to waste more money on workers)
They also called my dad and while we waited for him to pick me up, they told me not to worry because they were not going to call my employer, and that I was going to get a fine between 50-500 dollars(they said it was the company's decision how much I am going to pay). They were pretty friendly and told me not to do it again, and they were once in the same position as I was in before, and they even joked that I should've taken something that was more worthy of stealing. No police or handcuffs were involved, they did not ask what school I went to, and as embarrassing as it is, the total came out to under 5 dollars.
Now, I still sit here shaking from what had just happened less than 24 hours ago, and I read all almost all the threads on shoplifting. After I read all of the threads so many questions came up in my head:
-If they did not ask what school I go to, will they contact my school in any way?
-If the police were not involved, will I receive a citation or will it go on my criminal record or will it show up in any way in the future?
-They said themselves my employer was not going to be contacted, is it possible that they were lying?(I read in a thread before that they are technically allowed to lie as long as it is not written on paper)
-Will I be going to court?
Please respond as soon as possible. Thank you!

Re: Shoplifting At Vons
It is possible but not likely that your school will not be contacted, same goes for your employer. The store has until the statue of limitations runs out to press criminal charges, usually a year or two, if they do not, then you will not have a criminal matter to worry about. You will also not be going to court unless they do decide to press criminal charges before the statue of limitaions runs out. It's unpredictable what will happen, good luck though.

Re: Shoplifting At Vons
It sounds like they felt sorry for you and are letting you off with a "Civil Demand" letter or a "Civil Remediation" letter.
Based upon experience working out of an LP office, if you pay the fine then everything stops there. The LP in that store may know LP in the other store and might talk to them. The only way to know is to find out.
If it were my store I would have likely done the same thing, letting you go with, essentially, a very expensive warning.
You may want to see if Mom and Dad can feed you next time.
