Getting Local Phone Call Records From AT&T
    From California
My wife and I are retired senior citizens who don’t use the phone much. We don’t have cable or cell phone and use a calling card from MCI for long distance access. We have been maintaining a phone log for local calls and find that the minutes reported by AT&T iare way above what my records show. Three months ago, I demanded detailed records from AT&T but the company hasn’t responded. I called them and got the respond that I need a subpoena for t he records. I understand from a friend of mine that I have the right to demand proof of debt owed. How can I get the details without the expense of a court hearing/order? Also, are there other companies that offer basic land line access?

Is your service package for local toll service? In other words, are you billed by the minute for local calls?

If you're asking for your phone records, they may be thinking that you're looking to get the LUDs (Local Usage Details).

Ask for a billing detail instead. I believe those are required with measured service, upon customer request.

    Hi:

Thanks for the response. Attached is the letter I sent to AT&T. Any suggestions about what to do now?

    Thanks

    -----------------------------------
    Dear Manager:

I hereby dispute the bill I got for the zones 1&2 calls made in October 2007. My wife and I are elderly people who don’t use the phone much. The reported number and minutes of day, evening, and night calls are twice the normal usage. We therefore suspect unauthorized use by someone tapping illegally into our line and/or errors in recording and accounting. When I called the 800 number to ask for a copy of the individual phone charges, the operator simply brushed me off. My attorney, Ms. Beverly Mar, tells me that, since I am asking for only my personal phone line charges, I am legally entitled to a copy of the calls to verify their authenticity. I therefore request that AT&T provide the complete details of the October 2007 local calls.

Personally, I'd ask my attorney send the letter for me, on official letterhead.

Many will do this as a courtesy for long-time clients. It tends to get a fast response.

    Hi:

Thanks, but I did have my attorney send a letter in Nov. 2007 demanding the records. He specified that customers have a right to demand proof of debt. AT&T has chosen to ignore this.

AT&T used to have detailed call info available online, even for landline phones. Try going to their residential service website (the place where you could do things like pay your bill online) and look for "Call Detail Record". If you don't currently receive a detailed bill, the website should give you the option to change that as well.
