How and When to File For Survivor Benefits
My husband passed away nearly 2 weeks ago. I am 57 and work full time and live in Indiana, he died in Texas while visiting his brother. According to what I've read on the SS site, I have to wait until I retire before receiving his benefits. Yet, a co-worker of mine says she got her husband's benefits upon his death while still working full time and with no disability.
When do I qualify for them? When do I actually file for them? How do I file for them?
Thanks in advance for the help.

This page gives a detailed list of how you qualify. Your friend would have to qualify under the same guidelines. You can get benefits as early as 60, but you have to read to see if it applies to you.

This page tells you how to apply. Be sure if you call that you report your husbands death, if it has not already been done.
The SS website is actually pretty user freindly. If you are still confused, don't hesitate to call them.
    Good luck.
