Emancipation For A 17-Year-Old In New Jersey
Hello my name is Matt and I am from New Jersey. I live with my mother, and I visit my father occasionally in Pennsylvania. I am 17 years old and a senior in high school. I have a stable job with the YMCA, and I am seeking another job at Best Buy to provide more income for myself. I at this moment am almost completely independant already, I provide for myself, I buy my own clothes, food, gas, etc. and in the last 2 - 3 years my mother and I's relationship has deteriorated severely. I am planning to move out after my graduation on June 15, 2008 but my mother is attempting to make my senior year hell and force me to move in with my father in the middle of this year. I refuse to move in with my father because he lives in another state and I want to finish my senior year here. I have multiple places that I could stay if emancipated, I have paid for my own car, and I pay the car insurance and gas monthly. I do my own laundry, cook and I help out as much as I can. I just cannot take my mother threatening me constantly anymore, every day she verbally abuses me, threatens to call the police on me, and just criticizes every little thing I Do, nothing is good enough. My mother does not work, and takes anti-depressants and pain killers, as well as smoke pot. The pills are prescribed, but as you could guess the marijuana is not, and I believe that the drugs are what make her so intolerable and give her the mood swings that she experiences constantly. As I already provide for myself entirely except for the roof over my head do you think if taken to court it would be plausable to become emancipated? Please give me some feedback. Thank you.

The emancipation process is a slow one.

I will research the statutes, but your chances of getting this resolved prior to your birthday are slim.

There appears to be no statute for the process which doesnt mean its impossible but it does extend the time frame to complete I would guess

Personally, if it were me, and my pot smoking mother threatened to call the police, I'd be happy to make the call FOR her.
