Today I got a call from my local grocery store. The owner of the store explained that he can either call the police and have my son taken away or I can pay the restitution of 257.50 and my son can go home with me. I was confused as I have not had any trouble with my son and I am unfimiliar with the laws here in WA state regarding shoplifting. The amount of the items stolen was 7.50 for two chocolate milks and two energy drinks (He was caught along with his friend) the total amount that both kids tried to take was for 7.50. The items were unopen. I was unable to pay the money so I figured the owner was going to call the police but he did not. Instead he asked me when I can pay the amount. Is this legal? I felt that he was trying to get me to pay him right then and there. He also stated he would get his money one way or another.
I am aware that there are fine to shoplifters and parents are responsible for the actions of our youths but something didn't feel right about what happened.
Any input would be helpful and if what took place is normal please let me know that too.
Thank you so much!
