Fight At School Causing a Broken Nose
So here is the situation. Yesterday, my brother was in the weight room at our school, when him and a kid got into a argument over a benchpress. Then the kid tried to push him over. They then both talked trash about each other throughout the day, and my brother went around telling people he was going to fight the kid.
Today my brother came to school, and punched the kid in the face and broke his nose. (Then the kid tried to bear hug him and throw him to the ground, my brother said, but i am not so sure this happened)
They took the kid to the hospital. Then, the principal called my mom, tried to accuse my brother of doing steroids (which he doesnt) and saying that they were going to attempt to press charges of "Assault and battery" on him. Now, what degree of charge do you think this might be, and what kind of results does everyone think might happen? Can he sue my parents for all of their money? Can my brother be put into jail?

My brother is 15 and the other kid was 15 as well. The kid's nose was broken pretty badly and slid to the left a little bit. They may have had to do surgery.

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Also, this all took place in weight training class in school.

What state did this occur in? That will help in determining his possible criminal penalty.

Basically, there will be no criminal charges until the police get involved. however, your brother will likely be tossed out of school for the attack and he and your parents can be held liable for medical bills.

Your parents may want to start consulting attorneys now.

The school doesn't have to press charges - they are not the victim. It will be up to either the minor in question, his parents, or the state (i.e. the police) to forward charges for prosecution.

They could also just sue your family for a lot of money instead.
