    Caught Shoplifting, 18 Years Old
I am 18 years old and a college student in Florida. I was recently caught shoplifting $53 worth of merchandise. My parents were not notified of this because I am an adult and I'm trying to keep it that way. I have an assigned court date and I am wondering what I should expect to happen in the time leading up to the date. Is there anything that I should do? I also don't want to get the mail sent to my home address so I want to change my mailing address to the one at school. The officer said that I will probably just have to pay court fees but is there any other things that I should be worried about? Do I need a lawyer? I am very disappointed in myself for the mistake I've made and have learned my lesson, trust me. I'm just anxious and unsure of what I should be doing now, if anything.
    Thank you for your feedback.

I would recommend consulting a criminal defense lawyer, to see if there is any way you might avoid a criminal conviction. Sentencing options can vary by county.
