    Nationwide Sex Offender Changes
    Ohio

How can the law change what has already been assigned? The new "Adam Walsh" law kicks into effect in Ohio at the beginning of the year... I'm just curious how a sex offender who has say... 3 years to go can be given an additional 15 or however much they are given... can you give me an insight on this one? It's confusing... I as a normal person who knows NOTHING about law think it's rather silly that a sex offender who has been on perfect behavior be given more time. The offender does not attend functions that he feels shouldn't be attended, has only committed the crime once (in which he is registering for currently), and has no previous past of sexual misconduct. I am not a sex offender but I am related to one and even though this isn't happening to me directly, I am very very upset about it and need to understand why this is happening? He is the lowest grade of sex offenders right now, but is being told he will be a tier II... it just doesn't make any sense to me... Thank You!!

If you object to a law then write your State Congressman and lobby for change

He does not seem to be objecting, as much as he is trying to seek advice from others on this topic. We are all aware that we can write our Congressman.

Then we are also all aware as to how to effect lawmaking.

    Wishing doesn't make it so.

Read the tone of the original post again. Obviously, this person is wondering why such a law would be enacted.

Perhaps he can petition against the reclassification.

Instead of trying to determine what kind of "tone" they are using. Read the post and simply answer their questions. Why have a forum if every reply is "Contact a Criminal Attorney" or "Write your Congressman".

I do agree that those are viable choices in certain circumstances, but here you merely have someone seeking insight on a certain subject.

We can tell you what the law is. We have no magic by which we can miraculously change it.

What in the world do you expect?

Because, in many ways, we have no more insight into the reasons behind a law than in the reasons to change it.

And the answers you stated ARE the proper ones to some of the questions on this board. Including your own questions about how to deal with your issues.

I do not know about your state, but I know Pennsylvania jumped on it when the Federal government decided to give out money for "cracking down" on sex offenders. The state of Pennsylvania enacted laws which went into affect in January of 2005 which added approximately 6,000 names to their internet sex offender list.
One of them an acquaintance of mine had been convicted of a sex offense 17 years prior to this and never had to register. Suddenly his name was on the list and within six months he lost his home and his job even though his slate had been clean all those years. I know this because I was the last member of the board of directors of the agency that fired him that tried to stick it out and help him keep his job. I myself was forced to resign my position because of it.
It's not about justice, it's all about money. At least in Pennsylvania it is. In Pennsylvania, especially in Lancaster county, Pa. You do not have to commit a sex crime to be convicted with no evidence. You simply have to be accused.
I know this because I personally was accused of a sex crime I did not commit. Only by the grace of God, and (because I wanted my children to know that I would not lie, even to get a lighter sentence) my tenacity not to give in and plead guilty as the attorneys urged me to. Was I finally given a "nolo proseque" (I might be misspelling this). This took four years during which time my marriage and family were destroyed and I spent 8 months in prison due to ignorance on how to post bail.
Even now I continue to research and try to find information that might help others. And yes I agree about the letter writing. but you also need to encourage everyone you know that agrees with the injustice of these laws to write as well.
