Charged With Fraud For Switching Bar Codes

My friend went into walmart and placed a sticker of a cheap item over the barcode of an expensive item ($69). He tried to go through the self check out and pay less for the item so they charged him with fraud. What are the usual punishments for an offense like this? It is a class A misdemeanor. Does he have a shot at deferred adjudacation?
