Parental Income and Social Security Survivor Benefits
My four step-children are receiving Social Security survivor benefits based on the record of their deceased father. My wife and I are trying to determine if she should return to work but we are unable to get clear answers from the Social Security office regarding the childrens' benefits.

    We are trying to determine:

    1) If my wife goes back to work will it reduce the childrens' benefits?

    2) If the childrens' benefits were reduced and she later stops working would their benefits be restored?

As I said, we have been trying without luck to get clear answers. Since she has some health issues that could force her to stop working it is important that we know the implications before she begins. If anyone could point us in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    TCN

If these are survivor benefits (and only survivor benefits) the amount would be determined by the deceased parent's credits, not the surviving parent's income. (Lots of info here.)
