Second degree possession of marijuana

A friend of mine was arrested with 2 joints recently. He was arrested 6 years ago for a roach and 2 seeds. During the probation for the first charge he failed his urinalysis and his probation was extended for one year.
Does that add another drug charge? Will the third strike automatically make his offense a felony?

I am not aware of any state in which a probation violation of itself constitutes a prior conviction for habitualization purposes.
