Emancipation in New York, for a 16-Year-Old
Im 16,in New York and my single mother has a very severe case of Bipolar(understatment) which has led to a lot of emotional abuse, and financial instability. I know that in order to be emancipated you must be self sufficient and live outside of home. I working on the getting a job, and my boyfriend (he's 17) has offered to let me live at his house. But my mom wont let me live there, which is one of many reason i want to emancipate my self . Does that mean I wont be able to get emancipated unless i find my own apartment ?
And how much would it help my case that she's bipolar, and financially unstable ( She currently owes me $200 and Ive lent her more than 1000 dollars before)?
Also, would it effect my case that when I was 15 i got charged with shoplifting. I only had to write an apology letter and the probation officer said it wouldnt show up on my record?

Emancipation involves your ability to support yourself, and your mother's means are not relevant to that question. Criminal conduct makes emancipation less likely, as it casts doubt upon your ability to responsibly manage your own personal and financial affairs.
