Using the Father's Last Name When He's Not On The Birth Certificate

Can i use the last name of my child's father if hes not on the birth certificate? i have no idea what the law is about this in Virginia. he wont be there to sign the paperwork because hes outside the country and if i mail him the paperwork it wont get to me in time to catch a flight to south africa with the child to see him. I already bought the plane ticket with his last name for my infants and i cannot change the last name on the plane ticket. we plan to get married afterwards when he returns to the states. im just worried if i can use his last name on the birth certificate and worry about registering him on the birth certificate later. SOMEONE HELP!

You can name the child anything you want. The father will have to sign an AOC when he gets back to the states, until then the father spot will be blank.

so this also applies to the state of Virginia? because i notice other people with the same question say it varies from state to state.
