Shoplifted at Meijer
I've never shoplifted before, but I made a big mistake by stealing 2 items for $59 worth at Meijer's. When one of the employee caught me shoplifting, he immediately took me to the manager and he called the police. When the police arrived, he asked me if I have a lawyer and I said I don't and I can't afford it. I'm 48 years old and I was out of my mind at the time I was shoplifting. This was my mistake and I have never shoplifted before. The police reported this case and told me the fine is going to be $250 and told me to show up at the court at certain date. I'm wondering if I'll have to go to jail or receive fine that is more than $250. What is the worst case in this scenerio? Please help

Retail Fraud
The most likely outcome is that you will be sentenced to probation (possibly with community service or a similar requirement), plus a fine and court costs, and a statutory vicitm's rights fee. (The "worst case" scenario is that you get the maximum fine and penalty; but the "worst case" almost never occurs for a first offense, particularly where the offender's conduct was not particularly egregious.)
If you want a more specific prediction, you may wish to consult a local lawyer, or check with the court to see if you qualify for an appointed lawyer.

Thanks for your reply. So does that mean even in the worst scenerio, they won't put me in a jail? It will be just the fines and community services even in the worst case? Let me know!

Highly unlikely you'll get jail time. But if you go with a public defender it's a chance you won't get the best sentance you could get. Your best bet is to get a lawyer yourself. My lawyer took care of mine for $250 from start to finish. He got the sentance reduced for me (from retail theft to regular theft) for me and got me 6 months supervision. If I stay good for 6 months all is dropped from my record.

I'm so pleased to hear that. So, do appointed attorneys really help out? or is it better to find a personal lawyer? Please let me know what will be the best idea. Also, do I have to get a translater if I need or does the judge provide them for me? Help.....
