Collection Calls from Charged Off Credit Card
I now live in Ca, but at the time Oregon. American Express closed my account in 1996 and charged off the balance in 1997. I have just started receiving collection letters and phone calls from a collection agency now in 2007. Help. They of course are calling every day and sending letters that if I don't respond the debt is valid. Any suggestions? Can they keep calling? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A charge-off is meaningless in terms of debt collection, but a ten-year delay should put you past the end of the statute of limitations in either Oregon or California. I suspect the debt was recently acquired by a junk debt buyer who is trying to collect money, even though the statute of limitations has run.

This thread has a sample letter you can use to try to get the collection agency to stop contacting you.

Thank you so much for your response and the thread for the sample letter. It is greatly appreciated. D
