Getting Citizenship Through Your Kids
Hi everyone. I would like to know if I am able to acquire us citizenship through my kids. I was married to an American citizen in Germany for
15 years. During this marriage we had 2 children, both of which are now 19 and 15 years of age. We all still are living in Germany and have never lived in the US for more than 1 year. I used to have an alien id, but that was back in 1990, I think it has long since expired though.
I'd appreciate any feed back.
Thanks.
Sanija
Re: citizenship through kids?
Why not seek citizenship through your spouse?
Re: Getting Citizenship Through Your Kids
Like previously stated, I am no longer married to him, since last year may(05.2006)
Both my kids have the US citizenship. Isn't there a possibility in his case????
Re: Getting Citizenship Through Your Kids
Your post was ambiguous at best about divorce, a word you did not use.
A child who is a citizen and is at least 21 years old may sponsor a parent. Details are here.
Re: Getting Citizenship Through Your Kids
thx for the link! I took a look at it and understand that through my kids, I would be able to immigrate into the US. But this doesn't mean that I am able to acquire the US citizenship, right?
You see the thing is. I am a Serbian national( born in Kosovo) who has been living in Germany for roughly 38 yrs now. I still have a Serbian passport, but would gladly like to get rid of it, due to various bureaucratic reasons. Seeing to the fact that both my kids are US nationals, I was just wondering if I could obtain US citizenship, even though my kids and I are still and will probably remain residing in Berlin Germany???
I'd be very appreciative for any kind of assistance:D
Re: Getting Citizenship Through Your Kids
The first step to obtaining U.S. citizenship is to become a lawful permanent resident (as described in that document). You've probably heard lawful permanent residents described as "Green Card holders".
Re: Getting Citizenship Through Your Kids
yeah that is right, green card holders. That is a term I have heard of before. So I would first have to live within the US for a certain amount of years before being able to obtain the citizenship.
Re: Getting Citizenship Through Your Kids
That's part of the process.
