    Employer Not Paying for Hours Worked
    I have worked for a private investigation agency in Michigan for the past several years and have some concerns regarding the authenticity of this business and their pay practices re: their employees. I am not alone in this as other employees have encountered the same (i.e. working 12-14 hours and getting paid for 8 for example) yet I would like to talk to a reputable attorney or someone familiar with corporate/business law before I choose the next plan of action. I have understood that if an employee "pads" his hours that is considered "time theft" yet this company cuts hours and is possibly billing our clients for those full hours worked and pocketing the money. Finding a attorney here in the area isn't feasible because we are not sure who their attorney's are and that could get ugly.

    Thank you.

    have you contacted the DOL? Are you an hourly or salary employee?

    Hourly & salaried are just pay methods. Are you exempt or non-exempt? If you're exempt, you would not qualify for any pay over your regular salary no matter how many hrs. you worked. What are you duties? Do you believe you are non-exempt?

    I understand what you are saying about hourly v. salaried but with the info the OP gave, I can think of a situation where that is relevant to what he may be experiencing especially in regards to the situation with the customer billing.

    OP has left a lot of info out that is needed to make any call.

    but here is my bet;

    non-exempt

    hourly

    getting screwed

    still hasn't called the DOL which is the proper agency to handle this. An attorney would be a waste of money.

    how and what a customer is billed in none of the OP's business as long as he is not asked to do anything that would make him complicit in defrauding the customer.

    I agree if he's non-exempt & not getting paid for overtime, he needs to put in a claim/complaint with the state's DOL.
