Can You Sue Somebody Who Says You're Gay
This came up on a Broadway message board and none of us know the answer.
If someone says in writing (in a newspaper or on the Internet) that a person is gay, can the supposedly gay person sue? In my world it's not considered slander or defamation. I think it's different in England, and none of us know what the law is. We just know that somebody's boyfriend was arrested for telling the guy's in-laws that he is gay.

Tom Cruise did it - and won.

Celebrities enjoy a legal system different from us proles, though.

Greater potential damages from defamation, yes, but the law and legal system are the same.

We will have to agree to disagree here. Funny how celebrities don't seem to do jail time like the common folk for many of their offenses. Just to use a few recent examples, paris, nichole, and lindsey seem to have had a pretty easy time of it.
Re: Can You Sue Somebody Who Says You're Gay
Paris didn't go to jail? Wow. I wonder how the media got that so wrong....
Re: Can You Sue Somebody Who Says You're Gay
...and Nicole took a plea that sentenced her to 4 days in jail and (if I remember correctly) 3 years probation.
Ol' Linds is facing a whole boatload of prison time.
Lord, I need a life.:D
Re: Can You Sue Somebody Who Says You're Gay
I'm not gay, but if I were, I would be horribly offended at the idea that just saying someone was gay was enough to sue someone over.
But then, I live in a state that actually believes that gay people have rights and allows them to marry.

I never said she didn't do time, I said she didn't do time like the common folk.
She got her own room, for chrissakes. Extra visitation. A tiny sentence. Hell, she ALMOST got off with partying at her pad with friends instead of going to jail at all.
You are really saying this is how the "common" folk are treated for a SECOND DUI on a suspended license?
Carl, wanna chime in here? In California, what would I be looking at for getting pulled over drunk while driving on a suspended license that was pulled for an earlier DUI that had occurred recently?

Being in solitary, as required for your own safety, isn't fun.
