Worried About Being Caught On Camera
I am really freaking out!I know I shouldn't have done this, but about a week ago, i took about 6 power bars from safeway and stuck them in my purse. I only noticed the dome cameras on the ceiling and didn't even realize they had more all around, until after i had done it.so i went back to were i took them to see if there was a camera where i had put them in my purse, and there was! so i quickly went to the cash register and paid for two other power bars, but i still had 6 in my purse. I used my club card too and booked it out of there! I wanted to go put them all back, but it was in a hurry to get out of there! so now i need help! if they did catch me on camera, do you think they will track me down and try to find the info on my safeway card and get me in trouble? please dont judge me, i know i did wrong, but i am really scared and i would like to know what could happen. Like are they going to try and find me by using their cameras if they catch me? can they track me down by my club card? or is this some minor thing they dont care about?? please get back to me anyone ASAP!!!

    Hire a lawyer.

I think the chances of your being apprehended are very close to zero. If it will make you feel any better, you could send a money order to the store with an anonymous apology (keep a record of it). Beyond that, I'd suggest you stay away from the store....."and sin no more".

P.S. At this juncture, I certainly wouldn't hire a lawyer.

i will. But one question. Should i really hire a lawyer? i mean dont stores have funds set aside for people who shop lift? i know i shouldn't have done it, but what if they weren't even watching the cameras? Do they go over the footage everyday or what? Can they really track me down?please get back to me.

I think it is premature at this point to hire a lawyer. If you are inclined that way, see if you can find one who will give you a free consultation.

Safeway is not going to replay their tapes and get you on 6 powerbars. If they were going to catch you they would have done so at the time you were leaving the store. The only time they would go back and comb over security tape would be if something like say, a tv or big item was stolen and the police were investigating and needed to see the tapes. My advice to you: cut the crap. I speak from experience - I started with power bars and started taking more and more and you get cocky and think you are 'good' at it but a shoplifter always gets caught eventually and I hope that you NEVER have to go through being apprehended and the anxiety that ensues. You think you are worried now over this? Try actually being stopped in a store and imagine what that would be like. Take care.

Do you realize ho wmany hors of tape each store must have? Why would the sort through hours and hours of video for no reason? Even if they were told of theft and find video they will not have all the elements required to make a shoplifting bust. Your fine

being in retail we only review tapes for assoc. theft and customer accidents. Most stores have a loss prevention assoc. who works 40 hours a week. Since stores are usually opened 10 to 12 hours a day one never knows when they are working and either walking the store or monitoring the cameras. You were lucky this time don't push your luck.

Trust me, little stores will check their tapes for shoplifting. A friend of mine works at a local grocery store and he told me that they reviewed one particular tape for about 30 minutes trying to determine whether or not a teenager lifted a pack of cigarettes. So, it depends on the store.
