Petty Theft as Felony

Can a petty theft be considered a Felony?

This is something that happened 30 years ago. It's now only come up on a record check. It was for petty theft, I paid a fine of $50 but it shows up as felony! I was not even aware of this - I never saw a judge, just paid the fine.

I stole a wooden shop sign hanging outside 30 years ago (college prank).

What's the exact statute your record shows you as having violated (state name and statute number)?

Petty theft is a misdemeanor and grand theft is a felony.

Ask whoever gave you this information what the statute number was in 1973 for that offense.

You may have to go to a law library to check and see what the statutes were on that matter in 1973.
