Adopted and I Need To Be Emancipated
I ma a college freshman and I am having a very hard time getting my "mom" to do my fasfa..she has gotten to the point where she does not want to do any of the application process..I have tried and tried to get a chance to do what I can but I cant. I know that I can not file alone b/c I am not independent..But I might as well be.. I do not live at home and I pay for everything.

My question is what will it take to get emancipated and how long will it take.

Fafsa does not recognize emancipation for the way you want to use it.

If you're 18, you're probably already emancipated by virtue of your age. The problem you have, I assume, is whether your college treats you as a dependent of your parent for purposes of financial aid. That's something you need to try to work out with the financial aid office, consistent with college policies. You won't be the first student they have had who can't get a parent to complete FAFSA forms.
