    Shoplifting And Background Checks
i'm from nj and im 18 years old. i just got caught shoplifting at a department store. i was taken to the back, they took all my information. they made me pay for all the items, which was around 300 and some dollars. i also was made to pay some kind of fee [$150] so that i dont get sued by the department store. i was also told i was not allowed to go into the store anymore, and that if i did, it would be considered trespassing. the police were not called, and i asked them if that was it, and they said they wrapped it up. i asked if i should be expecting anything, like a call or something in the mail, and they said that's it, i should expect nothing. I dont know if i now have a criminal record or not, because the police were not called.

Since i paid a civil demand, does anything show up if an employer does a background check? Anything at all?

You were not charged the situation is over. Unless you tresspass and are arrested there is no criminal record

Depends on how its worded. In most cases they ask about convictions. If thats the case the answer is no

    sorry, one more question

    (a) will that affect my employment in other areas? There is no way for us to know that
    (b) will stores actually see it?Again how can we know that?
    (c) how can i check if i am in any database? You could ask the store but they are not obligated to tell you
    (d) how do i know if the store is a member of the database?

You can ask but they do not have to say
