Collections
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Florida via New York
If I am an independent contractor in Florida making calls for a law firm in New York (or any state), but the money is paid directly to the firm (the original collector), do I have to register as a debt collector? The debt is for services rendered or future services.

Re: Collections
As best as I can learn, you do not have to be licensed at the state level in NY but there are cities in NY that require licensing regardless of your location.
NYC is one:

Buffalo is another:

For other cities in NY you'll have to figure that out on your own.
For other states you can contact the office of the Secretary of State for licensing information.

Re: Collections
And just a note;
regardless of whether you must register as a debt collection agency or not, you must still comply with the fdcpa and applicable state laws regarding collectors. .
