Changing Your Child's Last Name in Florida
In changing a childs last name after either party files a motion do so; What is really the best interest of a child in these cases? Why is the Fathers last name more important over a mothers? Im just so confused  about this best interest thing terminology, all I read is about a child being taken care of properly. What is the best reason that can be given? thanks

What is the reason you want to change your child's name? Or...are you asking us to come up with an acceptable reason for you?

I dont want to change the name, the father does. we were never married and I named our son. But I was reading several cases that when the party that wants the name change would give a reason such as "carry family name" that was not good enough. I am just curious as to what would be considered best interest of a child when it comes to a name.

I think you'll find this case, McKay v Haikey, to be instructive. (PDF Format)
