Arrested for Shoplifting and Need Help
Last night I was arrested for shoplifting, less than $100, and taken to the county jail. I work for the local county, and now if I cannot get the charges dropped, I am out of a job. Is it worth it to call the store manager and see if he will meet with me to discuss dropping the charges? Or is there some other way to do it? I have basically until the end of the week to do this or I am unemployed. And the biggest problem I have is I am the sole provider for a family of 5.

I have never been arrested before, and never been in trouble with the law besides traffic tickets. I made a huge mistake, and I know it. Now I am scared for my family, as I know it will take a few weeks to find a new job.

Get a criminal defense lawyer, ASAP. Depending on your state and the county prosecutor's policies, you may be able to work out a resolution which allows you to avoid a conviction.

The problem with work finding out, the sherrif's office policy is to notify supervisor's of county employee's that are arrested, so they already know. Sorry, I should have said this is in Florida. I will do whatever necessary to get the charges dropped, if possible. Do you guys think it would be worthwhile to speak with the store manager, or is it ridiculous to think that he will be able to do anything?

The biggest thing for me, work wants to cut me away now. What happened to innocent until proven guilty in a court of law?

You work in an "at will" state your innocence does not apply nor does your guilt. You were already arrested and charged talking to Store Manager may mean little at this point. As you were already told consulting an Attorney is a must! You have much to lose!

So the Assistant State Attorney offered to drop the charges if I attended an anti-theft class. Attended and notified her on Monday, got an "Announcement of No Information" today. What exactly is that letter? I googled it and it only came up with 4 items. Does that mean the charges were dropped?

I would want to read it to be certain what it says, obviously.

An "information" usually refers to the sheet the prosecutor prepares and submits to the court outlining the specific charges against the defendant, so it logically follows that an "announcement of no information" would indicate that the prosecutor was not going to file that formal charging document.
