California Betting Law and Gambling Debts
hi. i didn't know where to post this, so here it is. anyway, my friend, who is just about to start law school made a $100 bet with me. we discussed the terms of the bet and shook on it in front of 4 witnesses. she lost and now she's saying she doesn't have to pay up because "gambling and betting" are illegal in california without permits. i'm not going to take her to court, but if i did, would i have a chance to win? or am i out of gas because she's right about the state gambling laws? thanks for your advice.

California has a long-standing public policy against the judicial resolution of claims arising out of gambling contracts. See, e.g., Kelly v First Astri Corp, 72 Cal. App. 4th 462, 471 (1999).
