Joint Vehicle Ownership With Owners in Different States
My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: Idaho & Ca
I live in Ca (Dad), son lives in Id, I'm going to purchase a new vehicle in Id, with my name & son's on title, register it in Id, as my son has residence there, then bring it back to Ca as my personal vehicle which he can use when family visits Ca., is this possible to do ?

    Thanks

Are you planning to keep it parked when your son isn't in town? Your son will have an Idaho driver's license?

Sure you can do all that. And then to be actually legal you will have to register the car in California within 30(?) of the time you bring it back.

There is also the issue of where you tell the insurance carrier the car is located. I've never gotten a quote for either ID or CA but I'm betting the charge more for CA.

Sure, it's possible. But what's going to happen is that, when you drive it, you'll get pulled over, the cop will see your CA driver license and residency and cite you for failing to register the car in CA.

How many of those tickets do you want to pay for before you see the light?

If they see it parked regular on the street with out of state plates they're going to wonder if you're breaking the law (which you are).

Why not simply buy and register it in CA since that's where the vehicle will be located and used there by a California resident? Buying and registering it in another state makes no sense.

People do it in an attempt to avoid California's vehicle registration fees, which unlike other states are obscenely high. Remember, California is the "Tax Me" state.

You're absolutely right re: "tax me state", precisely why I asked the question, lived here for 60yrs & now it's horrible, taxes, gas, vehicle registration

It would if you lived in Ca

I've lived in CA my entire life. I don't have a basis for comparison, but I've never had a problem with the cost of registering a vehicle. Gas is another story. Hopefully the ballot initiative to repeal Moonbeam's recent gas tax hike will be on the ballot in November and will pass. Beyond that, ain't nothing you can do about the cost of gas. Bottom line is that failing to comply with the law that requires you to register the car in CA within X days after relocating the vehicle here will subject you to being ticketed and/or towed.
