My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois.
I’m curious what the consequences are for a cop if he is 21 and dating a 17 (soon to be 18) year old.

The age of consent in IL seems to 17 unless the adult is in a position of authority, which a cop may be considered. In any case should the parents have issue with it I could see the cop having job problems if it is illegal or not.

There's no law in any state that governs "dating," and the fact that one of the persons involved is a cop doesn't change that.

By itself, dating is probably not a problem - legally or with regards to agency policy. Now, if the officer met the girl in the course of his duties, there MIGHT be an issue. If the girl is an intern or Explorer for the same agency, then it would almost certainly be a policy issue.
Details would matter.
It would not be the first time that a very young officer got involved with a not-quite-adult teen. Judgement by a young male - even if he's a cop - is not always governed by wisdom. -

You completely missed my point. If 17 and 21 is a problem, then it's a problem no matter what the 21 year old's job is. If it's not a problem, then it shouldn't become one due to his or her profession.
