Can we force supervisor regarding AED training?
We are a medium-sized manufacturing company with a day shift and a night shift. We have an AED unit out in the plant and currently I only have day shift personnel (including supervisors) trained on how to use that device in the event of an emergency.

Since it's been a few years since we have had the device in our plant, I'd like to provide a refresher course to those who have already been trained. As I was going down the list, I noticed that I don't have anyone trained on the night shift. When I approached the two night supervisors about being trained, one blatantly stated that he does not wish to be trained due to liability reasons. I later explained to him about the Good Samaritan Laws and that he should not be worried about trying to save someone but is still giving me resistance. The other supervisor said that he'll undergo the training only, "if nobody else wants to". I've since asked them both to ask around on their shift to see if anyone would like to be trained and they have not responded back. Basically, I'm getting resistance from that shift and the supervisors.

My question is - can I make the AED/CPR training mandatory for the two supervisors on that shift? I'd hate to have something happen and have not a single person trained on the night shift to use the AED device.

    Thanks.

Yes, you can. Tell them they have until x date to take the training (I assume you will be making the arrangements) and that their job is on the line if they do not.

Don't let the tail wag the dog.
