    What Can Happen in the Future if You're Caught Shoplifting
    My question involves criminal law for the state of: maryland
    i am 19 and was caught shoplifting from Giant, and I also was on video other times in the store. i was interrogated and forced to call my parents or go to prison they said. i was let go with only signing a paper saying i was not to return to the property but they did not have me pay anything. can anything happen in the future

    You could be prosecuted. You could receive a civil demand.

    BTW, shoplifting is not robbery, it is theft. Robbery includes the element of force or fear and is therefor much more serious.

    Indeed. Though if they didn't immediately contact the police there's a good probability that they aren't going to (he was very lucky).

    The CIVIL DEMAND is almost guaranteed knowing the company involved.

    He should:

    1. STOP STEALING
    2. Stay out of Giant and Stop n Shop
    3. STOP STEALING
    4. If the police/prosecutors office contact him, decline to speak to them without an attorney (who will almost certainly tell him not to speak to them at all).
    5. STOP STEALING

    Given the store chain involved (Giant-Landover), he can definitely expect the civil demand.
