The Police Came to My House After I Shoplifted
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
I was caught shoplifting merchandise worth about $62 today. Set off the alarm, but kept walking. A few hours later, an officer was at my door. I was in the shower, so I didn’t answer, but he was waiting for me when I left my place.
He told me the store just wanted their items or their money back. I went and got the items, took them to the store and apologized profusely.
The officer said that they saved me from a felony (even though I know the amount was a misdemeanor amount) and shook my hand and thanked me for doing the right thing.
I did not sign any paperwork and was not told to expect anything in the mail. I know everyone’s crystal balls are in the cleaner, but do you think this lets me off the hook? He’d mentioned my having a decent job and not messing that up. When do you think it’s safe to stop panicking about it?
I ask because I am terrified, but also because I’m not about to tell anyone I know about this. Thanks for reading.

If you weren't charged at the time the police escorted you back to the store, it is reasonable to infer that you won't be charged.
Your post makes you sound like a habitual shoplifter, if not a professional. It's not just about this incident. You appear to have received a big break, and can't count on that happening again.

No.
You need to sweat it out for about 6 months.
If nothing happens by then you are probably in the clear.
