Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check
My first job out of college lasted for 9 months. I hated it and wanted to go back to school for my Masters, but instead of quiting, slacked off so id get terminated and collect some unemployment. I know, really smart. Upon termiantion, my employer stated that " I was young with a long career ahead and it would be ok to list this job on my resume"
Heres my questions:
1. Can a background check uncover collection of unemployment? Is it public record?
2. SHould I call my old boss and ask specifically if what he meant was that he wouldnt say i was terminated.
If the collection of unemployment is private info, and my old boss wont say I was fired, im good to go,,but I dont want to get lie and get caught.

Right - don't lie when answering employment questions. They can come back & haunt you.
Re: DO I have to say I was terminated on Background check
Background checks are usually criminal ones not your employment history. Your employment history hirings, firings, resignations, lay offs should be on your job application and a good interviewer will ask for details! If during interview you were not asked then I would not worry. that being said the best advice was alaready give don't lie!
Re: Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check
Collecting unemployment is not a matter of public record. However, the WORST thing you can possibly do in a job interview is lie about why you left. Your boss may not be there forever and future managers may not be willing to lie for you. HR may not be willing to LET your boss lie for you.
Additionally, I have had information about employees fall into my lap when I wasn't even looking for it. There is no guaranteed that even if you get through the reference check unscathed, that a future employer may not find out the truth anyway. Bingo! You're unemployed again, and this time you have to explain how you got fired for lying.
I particularly like the part where you were willing to fraudulently collect UI, and now you want assurances that you won't get caught by virtue of that collection. As you say, real smart.
Re: Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check
Isn't the information a former employer gives, limited to the start and finish dates of employment?
Re: Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check
That's up to the former employer.
Re: Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check
Right - they can give out just about any information re former employment but it is suppose to be truthful or as far as they know believed to be truthful.
Re: Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check
Yeah, I you are all right, and Ive never hidden my termination, although I've def toned it down. Ive never lied, but was curious since the man who terminated me (its a very small comp) said " its ok if you want to list us on your resume" ,,,"you are young, and have a long career ahead"
Besides me calling him directly and saying what were you implying, what do all of you take from those statements?
And yes, I know it irresponsible, but at 22 yrs old, we arent always making the besat decisions.
Jeez, Id hate to fall under the management of cbg, I can only imagine her/his regard for rules/policy., lol
Re: Do I Have To Say I Was Terminated On A Background Check
Despite a widespread and persistant belief that an employer is limited to giving out only dates of employment, it is not true. In EVERY state, an employer may give out any information that is true, that he has a good faith belief is true, or that represents his honest and supportable opinion
So I should be okay with your deliberately slacking off so that you can get unemployment you're not entitled to? Hopefully you won't ever work for me; I don't think either of us would like it. I'm not quite sure how my not being okay with fraud equates to a disregard for policy and procedure.
Or maybe you're saying I should not hold you to policies or procedures? You should be allowed to violate them at will?
