Employer Allows Other Workers to Use a CPA's PTIN to File Tax Returns
A CPA in Georgia works for a tax preparation service. It has a number of employees who don't have PTINs (preparer tax identification numbers). The employer says that it encourages all workers to get their own PTINs but does not require them to do so. The employer is allowing workers without PTINs to use the CPAs PTIN to file taxes.
The CPA wants that practice to stop. The PTIN is supposed to be an individual number, not a shared number. What should the CPA do?
Re: Employer Allows Other Workers to Use a CPA's PTIN to File Tax Returns
The CPA will be best served by finding employment elsewhere, and reporting the employer's actions to the IRS. The CPA should also cancel the PTIN and get a new number that the employer does not know, and thus cannot use.
