Can You Get a Caregiver Job With a Shoplifting Conviction
Hello, im applying to be a caregiver. 30 years ago i got caught shoplifting. It was my first and only offense other than a few speeding tickets. I am now in my 50’s. They did fingerprint me but they called it a non-traffic violation. Im concerned this will effect me getting the job.

In some states you may have protections from a conviction that old being used against you, but you didn't identify the state. The EEOC would be skeptical of the use of such a conviction to deny employment if you're part of a protected group, but we don't have facts on that issue, either.

If there is no legal reason why the employer cannot consider the conviction, then it can be a factor in their hiring decision. I would be surprise if a single, thirty-year-old misdemeanor shoplifting offense was treated as a significant issue, but even if a minor consideration it can make a difference when an employer is choosing between possible job candidates.

I live in PA. I actually forgot about it until I was told they will have to do a background check. It was a bad decision on my part. I was 20 or 21 with younger friends that desided to take some stuff. I was taken in front of a magistrate, given a fine around $200 and fingerprinted. I was very remorseful because I wasn’t brought up that way. I love working and helping people and i hope this one very old thing doesn’t prevent me this opportunity.
