Engaging in Sexual Discussion With a Minor on a Chat App
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Florida

Hey guys, I've recently been having a lot of panic attacks and anxiety regarding something utterly stupid and embarrassing that I did months ago. Back at the start of October of 2017 I was very lonely so I downloaded an anonymous chatting app for people 18+ to chat with people from around the world. I chatted with a lot of people and carried out good conversations. Then at the start of the November, I entered this chat with this one girl and we chatted for a while like I normally do. I usually ask the person's age at the start of the conversation, but somehow I forgot this person's age because I was doing other things at the same time and old messages automatically delete. However, her profile said 18 so I continued to chat. I never ever sexted with anybody in my life before, but this girl requested we play a game and in the middle of the game she asked me what I would do to her and like the idiot I am I said two explicit things back. I have never done anything like that before. She responded to me and her response made me question for a second how old she was. I immediately asked for a picture to verify she was a real person and she told me to hold on. I then asked her again how old she was and she said 15 almost 16. I am 20. I immediately deleted the chat, changed my username, and left the app permanently. Ever since I have been feeling depressed and utterly disgusted with myself. It has been 4 months, but I am a person of very high moral values and I feel just absolutely dreadful. After this incident I immediately sent multiple reports to Apple about the app complaining about a lack of moderation and how the app allows underage users to engage in inappropriate activity. I also attempted to contact the app, but they don't respond to anything because it is a relatively sparsely used app. I actually got banned from the app for complaining!!

I went back on the app 3 months later using a friend's device and saw that she still uses the app which is frustrating because I know she probably is engaging with true predators in explicit chats and I can't do anything about it. I am not the type of person to engage in these types of chats. In reality, I actually attempt to go on anonymous chatting apps to help get predators and underage kids off of them. However, I made this one mistake that I severely regret and know was utterly and pathetically stupid.

I have just been sitting worried for months that I am going to get in severe trouble. No pictures were ever sent, no contact info was ever exchanged. The chat was completely anonymous. I have never done anything bad in my life. I just sent two bad texts. The app says that it deletes all old chats off of its servers which gives me a little comfort, but I just can't stop thinking about it. Do you think I am screwed? I am scared that the girl took screenshots of the texts I sent and her parents will find out which will facilitate a large investigation.

Three months after-the-fact, with no photographs involved, and your not even knowing if this person is in the same country? I would not expect anything to happen. Just don't make the same mistake again.

    Thanks for replying sir.

Yes, I did not exchange my photographs. I did send her two pics but they were completely clean pics of some random guy online. They were not nude or explicit or pics of myself, and I sent them because I was asked to verify if I was real. Does that complicate things? Also, do you think I can stop worrying, because I know that even though I made a sincere mistake I know the action I committed still was morally completely wrong? Also, if I had to guess I would say this girl is possibly from Detroit due to her profile name. However, I am not completely sure. If she is from the US does that complicate things?
I know I might sound overdramatic but I am someone who feels guilt very easily and this is worst thing I have ever done so naturally I am feeling excessively guilty about my actions.

I know I am reposting these questions, but it is only because I never got a response. Can someone help me out and I promise I will stop bothering you all. Thanks for your help and time!

Nothing you have said suggests you committed any crime. So I think you ought to take a deep breath, relax, and not work yourself up over this. Just understand for the future that meeting anonymous people online carries some risks, especially when the interaction you have with those people are sexual in nature. It is very difficult to confirm the age and location of someone online, so there is always a risk that the person you are talking to is actually a minor.

Thank you for your swift reply. You don't understand how much I appreciate it.

I never intended to meet or have a long talk with this anonymous person that I met in the chat room. I never sent any pictures either. However, I did send two to three explicit texts and she reciprocated back. Should I just let it go? I just feel like my explicit messages could be potentially detrimental? No personal info was ever exchanged and the chat room was deleted quite quickly.

Yes, you need to let it go. Take it as a lesson learned and do not do anything like that anymore in the future.

Thank you. I will try to let it go now and will never use online chat rooms again. You guys have been a big help. Do you think it is highly likely nothing comes of this?

I'm curious: how many times do you have to be told to stop worrying before you believe it? 3? 17? 2,978? Do you WANT someone to tell you you should still be worried?

    Ruie of thumb, OP.

Do not have sexual conversations with anyone you haven't met in person. If you stick to that you'll have far less to worry about.
