Can You Be Charged for Making a Police Report That You Later Find Was Incorrect
My question involves criminal law for the state of: new york
So I made a harassment report (domestic violence I guess) on someone I know who would not leave me alone. They would not stop calling or texting me when I’ve told them multiple times to stop. They would always make new numbers to contact me. I warned them before i was going to make the report. However, since usually this person does text me I assumed this new number texting me was them. Even though they denied it was them, I assumed it was because the person always does this behavior.
I made 2 harassment reports on this person, but it turned out this new number wasn’t them. it was someone else. I didn’t lie on my statements but it just turned out that the person wasn’t them.
Can i get in trouble for this?? I did not intentionally lie, i honestly thought it was my regular harasser but ironically when i decide to take action this new number wasn’t them this time.
one of the cops told me that since he didn’t threaten me and the harassment report says there was no threat and just harassment, that the report is closed and shouldn’t be no longer investigated. I informed them that i just wanted to make sure they don’t get in trouble too, but he said that they won’t since it’s just a report and it’s closed.
but now i’m worried about me. can i get in trouble for this? I just didn’t find out it was a different person harassing me until after i already had made the report and i don’t know if it would matter or not since it’s apparently closed and just a report. i don’t know if i should update them on this info because i don’t know if it would even matter. i know that they can’t delete reports.
So my problem is that I made a harassment report on someone when it turned out to be somebody else.

If the matter is closed, then it's closed. You can always ask to make a supplemental report describing your error, but with a closed case you may find that the police aren't particularly interested in supplementing the report.
If somebody were to make a complaint about you such that it was re-opened, you can explain your mistake -- but what do you think the odds are of that happening?

So I made a harassment report (domestic violence I guess)...
You GUESS? What does that mean exactly?
