Threatened With Prosecution After Attempting to Meet a Minor I Met Online
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan

Okay so I communicated with this girl from pof dating site. Her profile said she was 20 years old. We exchanged a few messages on pof before exchanging numbers. I had asked what she was looking for on there. She had said and I agreed that she was looking for friends and potentially more. So we took the conversation to text and talked for a bit. She asked my age I am 23 and she came back with 17 about to turn 18 in 3 months. At that point I should've stopped talking but I thought we were going to be friends anyways for a bit. We continued talking and she sent 2 pictures of her with no clothes on. I never asked for them I had sent a pic with all my clothes on except my shirt was off. We were suppost to meet at the mall and hang out yesterday for a bit, get to know each other. She never showed up. Her father called me the next day saying she stole her parents car to meet me and crashed. I never met this girl or talked to her over the phone only text. Her father said she is actually 16 and that they are considering pressing charges but may consider some compensation for the accident. She lied about her age multiple times, I have never met her in my life and feel like I was setup. I have no criminal history, all I was looking for was someone to talk to and build something. I need some help immediately!

So has this “father” suggested this could all go away if you send him money?

This has he earmarks of a scam, especially since (1) the girl never showed up and may not really exist and (2) the father suggests that paying for the “accident” might get him to not press charges (which in some states would amount to the crime of extortion). Even if there really was a girl and she had an auto accident, that accident isn’t your fault. There is really no crime you committed, either, so I suggest you just cut off communication with these people.

This "father" said his wife is considering pressing charges and turning my number into the police. Over the phone with him he was saying he doesn't want to go through with all the legal stuff and that he would try to talk his wife out of it. He used choice words on sending money when we talked. Saying I need to be accountable for what has happened. He was explaining himself like he knows it's their fought for being bad parents and that we may be able to work something out without taking legal action. I feel uncomfortable about this all. I don't feel like I'm in the wrong seems I have never talked on the phone with her before and don't even know if she really exists. I know it's not hard to get some fake naked pics and send them. However he was saying he would call me this afternoon around 3:30pm about what they're going to do about it and provide pics of the car damage. Once again that could be fake too. It's a stressful thing because you don't really know for sure. His daughter has a local number I looked up that had no reports that I found. Then this "father" called again from an out of state number which I found 1 report deeming unsafe about a year ago. Don't know anything more than that except we talked for 17 min on the phone about it. Oh and one more thing she's got no social media accounts when I asked in the first few texts we exchanged. Thinking to myself what girl doesn't have a social media account nowadays

I’ll say it again, this is likely a scam and even if it wasn’t you wouldn’t owe them anything. Just cut off all communication with them. Block their phones, block them from social media, refuse to talk them. They want to keep you talking because they hope to find the right button to push that will make you cough up money. Just be done with them and forget about it.

It’s a common scam. Any father worthy of being a father isn’t going to sell his daughter like that guy is. He would have already called the cops.

Thank you guys for the advice. Very helpful! I'll block them all and take it as a lesson learned. You never know what your dealing with on these dating sites.

You can reverse image search the photos. More than likely they are random photos the scammer found online.
