Ticketed After Changing Out of a Left Turn Lane As Light Went Red - VC 22101(d)
My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California

Hi - I live in Illinois, but two months ago, I was in California in a rental car. I got a ticket in the mail today saying I had run a red light. There were two days left on the video view so I went to take a look. What happened was that I was in the left turn lane, but realized that I wasn't supposed to be turning left there and changed lanes back to the center lane just as the Left arrow turned red - but the main intersection light was Green.

I got a $238 ticket in the mail for this from an automated camera. Citation is 22101D 29

I do get back to California from time to time, so my question is, is it worth fighting this? It feels like I was fine in what I did, I did not initiate a Left turn, I did not "run" the left hand turn light. I believe the citation is for running a red light, not changing lanes illegally in an intersection.

    ANy help would be appreciated.

    thanks
    Tammy

I can’t speak to the violation itself as the code section doesn’t make sense and lend itself to understanding the violation but I would surely not just ignore the ticket. Either fight it or pay it but don’t ignore it. Failure to address tickets in foreign states can result in suspensions of your driving privileges, initially, in that state but due to the various laws in the various states, it could actually result in the same in a person’s home state. It can also result in a warrant for your arrest which likely won’t be acted upon outside of California but that doesn’t mean it can’t be. It could also show up on a background check and wreak havoc on your employment.

From what I’ve read from people the know the system better than myself they nearly always suggest filing a trial by written declaration (TBWD) as a first step. It’s simple, easy, and can be done by mail.

He wasn't charged with running the light. He was charged with disobeying the LEFT TURN ONLY sign/markings.
I'm failing to see a defense.

I’m not disagreeing but op seemed to want to attempt to mount a defense. Filing a TBWD would be simple. The worst that happens; guilty. The best; a surprising win.
