How to Keep Custody While in Federal Prison Out of State

My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Minnesota. My Fiancé is currently doing time in a federal prison on the east coast. The mother of his child is taking him to court for full custody how can he keep joint legal while in a different state in federal prison. What can he do to have a fair hearing?

Realistically how can he exercise any kind of joint custody if he is in prison in a different state? He cannot. Mom is doing the right thing by going for full/sole legal custody at this time.
