Out of State Minor in Possession Charge
I am a 17 year old living in Linn County, Iowa. In June of 2017 I was visiting in Monterey County, California. While there I was in a vehicle with alcohol present. I was given a ticket for posession of alcohol as a minor and sentenced for a court date in Marina October 10, 2017. I wrote a letter to the courthouse asking what my options were due to me living out of state. A woman from the courthouse called and told me that they received my letter and pushed my court date back to the date of my 18th birthday (this seems odd and concerning to me). She told me I could also take a 24 hour class and present the court a certificate and the case would be dismissed. She did not tell me the specifics of what sort of class to take because she did not know what Iowa offered. How do I go about looking for a class that would meet California's requirements? What are my options here?

You didn't happen to get the woman's name or what her position is with the court, did you? If you were cited for possession of alcohol by a minor, the biggest effect of that is a mandatory 1 year driver's license suspension. I would assume that the woman was referencing an alcohol awareness class which minors who are found in possession of alcohol or publicly intoxicated are court order to attend. I'd suggest that your parents contact an attorney local to the court and have them to look into the matter.
