    And, sometimes, the situation is pretty darn clear.

    Re-read the original post. A friend was in our dorm room who was of age and had alcohol, as well as some alcohol from other sources. This means a single friend had alcohol AND "alcohol from other sources. So, it's not like he wandered in to say "hi", he came in to party. One does not casually wander the dorm hallways with sixpacks, bottles, etc. The OP and his pals were there having a good time or about to.

    It may also be possible that they could face additional sanctions for having alcohol in the dorms. Out here most universities and colleges have zero alcohol policies in the dorms and violation of that could result in removal from the dorms and even additional penalties up to and including suspension from the school.
